The Community-minded Adam Smith

Adam Smith likes nothing more than a run in a truck and was excited to bring mate, Nick Radford’s T908 across to Koroit at the end of January from his home town of Mount Gambier. A driver for CleanAway, Adam is a community minded bloke who donates a large part of his spare time to volunteering in the area. He was a driving force behind the recent Mount Gambier Hay Run. “Basically I’ll do anything to make a quid for a good cause,” he said.

He goes on to talk about dressing up as a lady in the middle of winter and walking down the main street to raise a couple of thousand dollars for the community.

“Someone bet me a thousand dollars I wouldn’t get my chest waxed. So I did the full body on a Friday night to raise money for mental health. That brought in $5000. Then there was the Full Monty night where we raised $50,000. A bit embarrassing, but very satisfying doing something for community.”

What makes a truck driver want to give so much to the community?

“It’s in the blood I reckon. Truckies just have the best hearts. I’m not blowing a trumpet talking about the industry. People just don’t realise how big hearts they have. The general public don’t see that. I think that’s why truck shows are so important, along with the camaraderie it’s an opportunity for the public to see that  we’re not just a bunch of hot-rodders.”
