The Wheels On The Truck….
Mercedes-Benz chosen for mega tyre haulage
A second Mercedes-Benz Actros has joined the D and K Scott Transport fleet to deliver massive tyres from Port Botany to the mines in the Hunter Valley. The company uses custom-made trailers designed to carry tyres that measure up to 4.2 metres tall and 2 metres wide (that’s wider than Clive Palmer - just).
The special tyres, mostly for off-road mining equipment, feature GPS sensors that monitor exactly how many kilometres they cover. I thought that’s what speedos did. Anyway ….
Managing Director, Darren Scott, has been impressed with his 13-litre 2653 Actros with all it high tech safety features, and decided it was time to add another. This time around he went all out and opted for the 16 litre engine with MirrorCam. (The truck’s got mirrorcam, not the donk)
The 16litre, six-pot engine pumps out 580hp and features variable high-pressure injection, an asymmetrical turbo and turbo compounding and is linked to a 12-speed automated manual transmission.
Driver, Diego Manzo appreciates the quietness when he is on the road, especially when making phone calls – which of course he does hands-free. He likes everything about the truck (which runs at about 60 tonnes all up).
“It’s so comfortable that I don’t get tired after driving it,” he says. “The truck does a lot of the work itself.”
(Shhh Diego. You’re going to put yourself out of a job)
