Like it or not, we are heading towards an age of electric transport. Cars are already well on the way with the world’s richest auto company being one that only makes electric vehicles – Tesla. That’s right, Tesla is worth more than the Toyota, VW or Ford conglomerates.

Truck manufacturers are leaping into the arena, because they really have no choice. What we will see on the highways in 20 years’ time is anybody’s guess.

Meanwhile the quest for more efficient fossil powered trucks continues – a credit to those companies who have invested heavily in engines whose very existence will no doubt be outlawed at some stage in the future.

Every percentage gained in fuel economy can save a business tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars each and every year – and with diesel fuel prices in Australia at an all-time high, it is more important than ever.

So when a trucking company announces a new powertrain that promises an 8% improvement in fuel economy, it makes news. That news has been released as Scania Super.

Scania’s new powertrain promises such fuel savings and its release coincides with major updates on chassis, frames, tanks, as well as lighter axles and gearboxes. These powertrains can be ordered as biodiesel versions, and bio-gas is in the pipeline (pun intended).

There are new exterior and interior features being introduced along with option of digital rearview mirrors to increase safety.( Having experienced these on another brand I’m all for them.)

In its single biggest launch since the introduction of the new truck generation back in 2016, Scania is now introducing not only a new engine platform, but also services and updates that are set to consolidate its position as the leading manufacturer of premium heavy trucks.

“We see a world of transport that is rapidly changing, where customer demands for the best total operating economy and a sustainable future go hand-in-hand,” says Alexander Vlaskamp, Executive Vice President, in the video at the end of this article.

“At Scania, we have set our aim higher than maybe any other manufacturer. Not because we think it will be easy but because we see no other option than to actually reach the targets for curbing greenhouse gas emissions set by the Paris agreement in 2016.”
